No Bullshit Approach to Search Engine Optimization and Google Page Rank With Dan Cristo

This is truly an EPIC podcast with my favorite new person Dan Cristo.

Turns out, Search Engine Optimization and ranking well on google is not that hard when you have someone who can explain the fundamentals of SEO in an easily understood fashion.

We approach SEO from the google’s point of view and discuss THE MOST IMPORTANT factors to ranking well on google and other search engines. Dan calls this the low hanging fruit. Pick it. Bite into it. It tastes so good, dont it?

Thx so much for sharing Dino. I’ll get listening. This is the answer to my prayers (I am so confused about SEO). There’s so much BS around…

    • Dino Dogan

It will be epic, I promise. Come back and tell us what really stood out for you.

      Hey Canis,

Looking forward to you thoughts on the podcast. Dino promised it’s epic, so it we need to know if he has kept his promise.

Doh, am only now on Disqus so tracking your response. Sorry for the (3 months!) delay in replying. Another confession: I STILL have not listened to the podcast! Shame on me. I don’t deserve the blog readership ; P

  • Chris Loyd

I downloaded this podcast before going to work and had to “come back” and leave a comment. You guys were so funny. The entire SEO podcast played like a skit rather than a boring old topic of search engine optimization. And I’ve learned a lot, wow!

I dont think I have any questions yet. I think I need to listen to it again to let it sink in. Maybe just a note about something Dan said about targeting a 3-5 word phrase first, ranking well for it and then moving up the ranks. The whole thing sounds really tedious which is usually a sign that its genuine.

This is one more reason for me to move from posterous to wordpress since posterous doesnt have a lot of SEO related functionality (that I know of)

    Thanks guys, amazing stuff.

    • Dino Dogan

Thnx Chris. Im glad you found it useful. yeah..Im using posterous for my dog blog and youre right, the SEO is light on that platform. WP is def way to go 🙂

      Hey Chris,
Thanks for taking the time to come back and leave a comment. Any comedic relief gets credited to Dino. That dude is a riot (sidenote: I know Dino will read this, so I’m saying nice things 🙂

Seriously though, we had fun doing the interview, and I’m glad it came across as light, yet informative. If you do end up running into some, “OH NO, SEO – WHAT DO I DO” questions, send them to Dino and maybe I’ll get a chance to come back to the show for some community Q&A.

  • jana rade

Great interview, but makes me want to give up doing anything

    • Dino Dogan

You better not…dont worry…I’ll handle the SEO junk on Dogopedia…you just continue to write awesome shit 🙂

    • Anonymous

      Hey Jana,
SEO boils down to building authority on a specific topic, and that can be a really fun thing. Focus on sharing your expertise though great content, and the community will recognize your site’s authority on the topic. Never hurts to have someone who understands search engines around so they can they can help you build that authority in the shortest time possible. Thanks for taking the time to listen to the interview.

  • Edwin

Thanks for this cool podcast. I need some help with SEO and this should help

Thanks for leaving a comment Edwin. Feel free reach out to me using some of the content links at the end of the post, and I’ll be happy to give you some advice if you need help.

  • Murray Lunn

Dude, I lsitened to the whole thing – no lie – that’s what makes the interviews great Dino – they aren’t stuck up; very candid but there’s always a ton of great information packed in there. Got a few great ideas out of it like playing around with old domains and doing a bit of 301 redirects (for links). Congrats on putting together another one – also, really cool that you got Dan over here so quickly; we were just checking out the site just recently haha

    • Dino Dogan

Awesome that you hung in there…I know you know SEO so it means a lot that you stayed with it 🙂

  • Elise M

Hey Dino, thanks for letting me know about this. I listened to it this morning and it was well worth the listen.

I’m already pretty familiar with overall SEO methods, but it doesn’t hurt to learn more and listen to what others have to say about it. And this really helps now because I’m in the process of trying to create a few authority niche sites where I’m trying to rank for some good keywords.

Again, this was really awesome! You should totally keep it up with the podcasts. They’re great to listen to. And it gives me some good and interesting learning material so I’m not bored to tears when I ride as much public transit as I do these days.

    • Dino Dogan

I love that you loved it. We have to do one.

  • Brankica U

Dino, I am back to tell you that I listened to this thing. I didn’t learn anything new except that I should move to a better neighborhood….oh, wait, I already did….never mind….

Well, anyways, it was a cool thing, I might not delete it from my computer and I had a blast listening to it. Loved hearing your voice and English with no accent…how do you do that man!!!

I am quite new to Seo , just trying to figure the best of what I understood. I really liked it , most things were vague to me before I viewed this. Thanks for sharing.

    • Dino Dogan

Glad we helped explain it little bit better. We have a second installment coming out this week and another one next week, which should take you deeper into the world of SEO….you will end up an expert by the time Im done with you 🙂

    Hey Dino & Hi Dan

Well, I’m glad I listened to this podcast again – all 9 hours of it lol. Kidding – but yes, the whole thing.

With my very limited knowledge of all things SEO (as Dino knows) – I’ll probably have to listen to this one more time lol. Needless to say – it’s been bookmarked! Excellent stuff! Thank you.

Some really great tips in here. I always hear how important the domain name is but unfortunately when I started my blog, I had no clue about these things. But then again, I’m not sure I would change if I were to do it all over again as it kinda grew on me and in a way it did help with the branding.

I have many questions (probably about each point) – but asking them all would leave you with a novel here so just this one.

I heard you say that the age and expiry of a domain comes into play with rankings. Maybe the latter less.

When I renewed my domain recently – I did so for 2 years – even thought I plan on keeping it for a 100. But when you search to see that – it shows you the expiry date as next year. Basically my name expires in 2012 but it’s showing 2011. I guess it’s a year by year thing. So how does Google know that? Sorry if this is a silly question lol ;).

I’ll get my other questions ready for when I hear this the 3rd time round lol. One by one – starting with keyword searches and links :).

Thanks for the very interesting and helpful discussion.

    • Dino Dogan

Dan and I will be doing another podcast that will consist solely of one-off questions like yours. (tho he doesnt know this yet lol)

Anyways, your internet registrar (whoever that may be) has your expiration date they feed to whois database online somewhere, which can be read by google. I assume thats how it works…Dan?

  • Riley Harrison

    Hey Dino,
This is a post that should be mandatory reading (listening) for all, especially blogging newcomers. There is so much statistical noise concerning SEO that even confident people begin to question their judgement. Your big picture perspective and common sense approach is much appreciated. Thanks

    • Dino Dogan

Thnx Riley…I appreciate the kind words. We’ve all been there, strugling to understand what matters and what doesnt, and Dan was kind enough to share his expertise with us….we have follow up interviews as well, I hope you find time to give those a listen as well 🙂

    hello Dino,

Is there a way to subscribe to your podcasts via something other than itunes, namely an android phone?

    • Dino Dogan

      Hi Karem….damned if I know….

I have close to 20 but even those are not all listed in iTunes because there isnt a podcast specific feed for those…

I have to make a page that lists all the best stuff per category to make browsing easier, but thats like a 1001 thing on the list of things that need to get done lol

For now, the best way I could recommend is to browse around, download to MP3 and take em like that…

How do you find your Android? I had it for 1 week then had to reluctantly trade it in for iPhone cuz mine kinda sucked monkey balls.

The most important aspect that impacts the position of the website is the articles. If you provide quality articles, individuals will always come back to the website. Individuals normally weblink to your website when they find your articles information and useful. You should create articles that have clean thoughts.
