First Step In Becoming a WordPress Rockstar

For about a million reasons, I think every serious blogger should be using a hosted WordPress installation as their blogging platform.

The problem is that in order to do that, you have to purchase a hosting plan from a company like Host Gator (Affiliate Links).

You have to train yourself in WordPress while paying for a hosting plan and while you’re doing that, you’re not making any money with your blog.

That is a bad scenario, but it doesn’t have to be so.

Using MAMP for Mac (or WAMP for Windows OS) you can install WordPress on your home computer, learn how to use WordPress, install themes, plugins, customize the look of your blog to your hearts content.

When you’re comfortable with the way your site looks and you feel comfortable working with WordPress, you can purchase a hosting plan and hit the ground running.

You can in fact, deploy a money making blog on day one.

So how do you install WordPress on your home computer?

Watch this video.

Ok, Dino, I’m feeling much more upbeat after reading this post and watching the video. So, there are other vids you’ve done that follow this in continuing the setting up this test WP blog? Wish I had thought of asking you about this before. I don’t know why I didn’t. I guess I was trying to figure out things mostly on my own and the questions I did ask to others, I guess weren’t the right questions and/or I was asking the wrong people.

I do have other videos but they are not the logical continuation of this one….I’ve been meaning to to a video on installing themes, thats in the works. Tnx for a much needed kick in the butt in that regard, I’ll get those out there asap.

I love having my blog on my local host cause I can play with it and do crazy stuff. I did crash my computer and everything more than once, but I learned how to do CPR on it so it is OK now :)

There really isnt any better way to learn WordPress than to have it installed locally on your computer…otherwise you have to experiment on your actual live blog..and if things crash in the process…ooops lol

Whats your Top 5 classic books (e.g. Pride and Prejudice, Great Expectations etc.)?

    • http://diyblogger.net/about Dino Dogan

oh dude….dont make me choose :-) I will say this. I dont read much fiction. Out 50 or so books I read last year, only one was fiction (the very first Sherlock Holmes story).

So, lemme list my fav authors cuz there are just so many amazing books:

      A.J. Jacobs
      Nassim Taleb
      Robert Greene
      Malcolm Gladwell
Paul Zane Pilzer/Daniel Pink share the spot No 5 :-)

See? I couldnt even keep it within 5 authors, much less 5 books :-)

Great Q…thnx for asking. Is this for your podcast or something?

There’s an even easier way: the BitNami WordPress stack. It installs EVERYTHING you need straight away. It creates the folder structure you need right there on your hard drive. All you have to do is fire up your browser of choice and login to your WP dashboard.

      good one…love it :-)

You can also use BitNami + a free Amazon Web Services “micro” instance and get free hosting for a year.  Super helpful as you’re getting your blog off the ground!

Too bad I didn’t know of such a thing when I started mine. I went through hours if not days, messing stuff up, fixing it, freaking out because I thought I lost it, refraining from smashing my computer all over the sidewalk, etc. etc. This is a great idea for people that are setting their sites up themselves and will probably save them a lot of frustration…and time.

It’s pretty neat, isn’t it? Thnx for leaving a comment on an oldie but a goodie :-)
