6 Pixels of Separation Takes a Piss in Facebook’s World Domination

Is Facebook going to take over the world? They think they will, but something I found in Mitch Joel’s 2009 book 6 Pixels of Separation (Amazon Affiliate Link) will put a monkey wrench in Facebook’s plans for world domination.

This small, throwaway piece of inside info Mitch managed to squeeze out of a Google CTO will be the linchpin of Facebook’s demise.

In this episode, Dan Cristo and I discuss how Facebook is positioning themselves to take on Google in the fight for Search supremacy.

Truly can’t wait to listen to this, Dino. No doubt it is going to be more than a bit irreverent. Will comment further after I listen.

    Dino and Dan,

You are now entering the Twilight Zone! I have never been able to convince my self to sign up for Facebook. Love the audio. I appreciate your ability to step back and observe what is going on and what the implications are for the future.

    • http://diyblogger.net/about Dino Dogan

Thnx Sheila, Dan clearly has a tremendous insight in these matters and Im glad he was able to share it with us. In the words of Wayne and Garth.. “We’re no worthy, we’re not worthy” lol

    • http://twitter.com/dancristo dancristo

Thanks for the kind words, Sheila. Consider yourself lucky for not signing up on FB. Once you’re on the grid it’s not easy to disappear. That being said, it’s Facebook, not the government. If people want to give up their info and privacy in exchange for better communication with friends, more power to ‘em. I was happy with that trade off for a long time, but then the value of the service started to diminish.

I think still it’s a valuable marketing vehicle, I just want people to be aware of some of the trends I’m seeing crop up. Thanks again for taking the time to listen to the audio and leave a comment.

I’d like to add that I finally did see, “The Social Network”. I was really disappointed with it as a whole. Sure it was a great story, and the acting was phenom, but I was disappointed was because I was really expecting to dislike Big Bro Zuck quite a bit more. Turns out that I actually related to the character.

So now I’m torn between sticking to my principles of hating Facebook, and feeling sympathetic to the fact that he was an entrepreneur and developer. So while I relate to how he got to where he is, I also have to keep in mind that there are $7 billion differences him and I. ha.

In all honesty I really did enjoy the movie, and would recommend it. I still have trouble understanding how The Face Book went from a college website to a corporate powerhouse. I give them props for getting to the top, but I just wishing it had a little competition in the space. Without competition, the consumer can really be taken advantage of – as shown by Mark constantly trying to desensitize us of privacy.

Hoping that Twitter won’t sell to FB. That would just make me very sad face.

We might have to discuss niche facebooks (like 2wheeltips and corkd)..have you seen those? I think thats where things are going but I could be wrong…

Niche social networks will be here soon enough. Facebook will go the way of AOL – large, clunky, universally known, largely despised and around for a long, long time. But the days of it being the most important URL on the web won’t last forever.

If history is anything to go on in these types of scenarios (and it usually is) you are def right. Cant wait :-)

I’m just waiting for the big corporate battle that is about to emerge and start a revolution of digital dissent. No more millisecond searches or sharing shit to fake friends we don’t give a rat’s ass about. It’s back to the Dewey Decimal system and carrier pigeons with notes on their legs, true social media.
